Company Profile

Health Sciences North|Horizon Santé-Nord

Company Overview

Health Sciences North|Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN) is a new one-site acute care hospital, which boasts 13 ORs and state-of-the-art equipment. As a large tertiary care provider for Northern Ontario, HSN is the regional referral centre for the region, serving nearly 800,000 residents. HSN’s 454 bed facility employs over 3,900 people and has a medical staff of over 250. (www.hsnsudbury.ca)

Since the new hospital opened its doors in March 2010, HSN has also opened a separate facility - the Sudbury OutPatient Centre (SOC) - where our multi-disciplinary team treats people with chronic disease to allow a more healthy and independent lifestyle. The SOC houses the region’s Diabetes Care Service and Bariatric Centre that offer a specialized approach to meet the needs of children and adults.

As a new academic health sciences center, HSN also established a Simulation Center in 2011. HSN strives to provide opportunities for innovative education, collaboration, interdisciplinary training and health care education research. An additional 20,000 square feet of Learner Space is on the horizon at HSN to accommodate the growing number of medical students and residents, and help advance its academic mission.

One of HSN’s most recent successes is the creation in 2011 of the Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada (AMRIC). AMRIC’s goal is to accelerate the translation of innovative scientific ideas into widespread application. By focusing on the health priorities of the people of northern Ontario (geriatrics, cancer, chronic diseases and infectious diseases) – and by extension, other regions nationally and globally that present similar health care or disease profiles – AMRIC is well-positioned to leverage public and private investment to apply knowledge and advance promising new therapeutics. Sudbury is also home to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (www.nosm.ca) - Canada’s newest medical school. Candidates are invited to become involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.

Sudbury offers an exceptional quality of life, with excellent schools, abundant lakes and extensive recreational opportunities in any season! The City is near spectacular Georgian Bay and Muskoka regions, and within a 50-minute flight or four-hour drive from Toronto. (www.greatersudbury.ca)

If you are interested in leading change, in sharing your clinical expertise, and in making Sudbury the clinical, academic and research strength it can be, we would love to tell you more about our opportunities!

Company History

On November 1st, 2011, the Sudbury Regional Hospital was renamed Health Sciences North (HSN). This was the culmination of a long-held promise to our community. When the government announced a new acute care centre for Sudbury and region, followed by the creation of a medical school for Northern Ontario in 2005, the future opportunities afforded to our institution were boundless!

That promise became reality with the launch of Health Sciences North. The new name and, more importantly, the new vision for health care, is the synthesis of this process. We are implementing this new vision for health care in the region - one that reflects the values and ideals of our northern communities.

Health Sciences North is a new approach to delivering the highest quality patient care, research, teaching and learning to our region and beyond. It is a network of facilities and programs working together for the benefit of our patients, communities, physicians, researchers, staff and health care learners in the areas of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care.

As we look into the future with renewed focus, it will be strengths of our people, our hospital and medical staff, and our partnerships that propel us forward. HSN invites you to be a part of the challenges and rewards of our evolving health care community!
